Fabiano Caruana wins 2023 U.S. Chess Championship

Caruana wins second consecutive title

After 10 of 11 rounds, defending champion Fabiano Caruana has won the 2023 U.S. Chess Championship with a round to spare. His 7½ points out of 10 lead the field by 1½ points with just one round remaining, meaning no one can catch the current World #2. Fabi clinched the title with a win over the youngest GM in history, Abhimanyu Mishra.

The tournament is being held in Saint Louis, MO and being hosted by the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, as it has been each year since 2008.

The concurrent Women’s event has seen a two-player race all the way between IM Carissa Yip and WGM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova. “Begim” lost her first game of the event in the penultimate round to 8-time champion GM Irina Krush, resulting in Yip having the lead with 8½ points out of 10. Tokhirjonova sits on 8 out of 10, and has also secured her second International Master norm.

The tournament runs from October 5-18. Follow all the results and daily live broadcast at uschesschamps.com.
