Carissa Yip wins 2023 U.S. Women’s Chess Championship

Yip wins second title after wild final round

Going into the 11th and final round of the 2023 U.S. Women’s Chess Championship, IM Carissa Yip and WGM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova led the field by an insurmountable margin. Yip had 8½ points, while Tokhirjonova stood at 8.

A draw by leader Yip would ensure at least a playoff, while Tokhirjonova likely needed to win.

The first surprise was Yip losing with the white pieces to FM Ruiyang Yan in a long battle — her first and only defeat of the event.

Then, also having white and needing only a draw to secure a playoff, or a victory to claim the championship outright, Tokhirjonova was felled by two-time champion WGM Jennifer Yu.

As a result, Carissa Yip is the 2023 U.S. Women’s Champion!

The tournament was held in Saint Louis, MO and hosted by the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis.
